href="https://www.birdlifeproductions.co.nz/shows/aya-and-the-butterfly">Aya and the Butterfly is a gentle and joyous puppet and music show for children aged 3–9 years (and the grown-ups who love them).

Based on the book by New Zealand-Palestinian author Dr Maysoon Salama, and created by New Zealand touring company Birdlife Productions, the show follows Aya, a young girl navigating grief within a Muslim family. As she experiences the miraculous metamorphosis of the Monarch Butterfly, she begins a healing journey that restores her sense of joy and connection to nature.

This word-rich but movement-centred performance is especially crafted to support emotional wellbeing, cultural diversity, and empathy in young audiences. It is delivered with exquisite puppetry, live music, and sensitive storytelling.

“Respectful, heartwarming and poignant – has children mesmerised.”
– Yvonne Milroy, Hamilton Arts Festival

“Absolutely enchanting. href="https://www.flibbertigibbettheatre.co.uk/portfolio-item/the-farmer-and-the-clown/">The Farmer and The Clown, adapted from the picture book by Marla Frazee (Boss Baby). This wordless show has been developed with Visual Language consultants to ensure the show is accessible to a wide range of audiences, including those who are Neurodivergent, Deaf or hard of hearing, and features dance, puppetry, physical comedy with a gorgeous live soundtrack.

"We saw Clown and Farmer..... it was seriously one of the most wholesome, imaginative, beautiful and emotional things I've seen in such a long time. I took my 9 year old autistic daughter, and 6 year old, who giggled throughout. It also left me in tears at the end. I loved it." Audience member

The story is of an unlikely friendship between an old farmer living in the middle of nowhere, and a baby clown, who has fallen from the back of a passing circus train. What happens when someone from a different world, lands in the world of another? The story delicately explores themes of loneliness, friendship, and care, across the divisions of age and community. This is a show brimming with kindness and joy.

‘UTTERLY HEARTWARMING AND RELATABLE…. ideal for teaching the fundamentals of performance puppetry. When puppeteer Sophie Powell struggled to find the right teaching puppets, she and maker Annie Brooks launched PuppetBox — combining their creative forces to design puppets that come to life in learning environments.

Their work has supported shows and workshops for Long Nose Puppets, Get Lost & Found, OH! Productions, and more — and their workshops have become a trusted resource in schools, colleges, and theatre training programmes across the UK.

With backgrounds in puppetry, writing, physical theatre, education, and visual design, Annie and Sophie bring decades of experience to every workshop — and a deep belief in the power of puppets to connect, teach, and spark creativity.

Subscribe now

Spotlight On: It's Better in the Dark

Ideal for: Theatres, fringe festivals, late-night programming.
