From Blank Faces to Bold Characters: Master the Art of Puppet Painting online

“Puppet Painting: Explore Colour, Shading, Materials & Painting Techniques” is a 4-part online workshop hosted by Open Eye Theatre and led by the incredibly skilled Sarah Eaton — a professional scenic artist with experience on projects for Disney, Broadway, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.

This immersive class covers it all: paint application, colour mixing, theatrical finishes, and shading for expressive puppet faces. There’s a mix of guided instruction, self-directed projects, and one-on-one feedback — all skill levels welcome.
Required materials:
Acrylic paint (cyan, magenta, cadmium yellow, white, black, raw umber, and your favourite extras like gold or silver)
Optional: Golden’s gloss medium
Sketch paper, pencil, eraser
Brushes (small, medium, large)
Painter’s rag, water jar, and palette (lids work great!)
Meet Your Instructor: Sarah Eaton
Based in Portland, Oregon, Sarah Eaton is a painter, educator, and scenic artist with deep experience in puppetry and stop-motion. She holds an MFA from Oregon College of Art and Craft and has painted for major productions including Tiny Chef, In The Know, and Cirque Du Soleil. Her work has appeared in galleries and on screens across the country.
Sarah brings warmth, precision, and a love of storytelling to her teaching. Whether you're picking up a brush for the first time or refining your craft, you're in excellent hands.
